Whimsy and Magic in Everyday Life

Rin Jirajakkavan is an illustrator whose illustration is a direct and vibrant fusion of contrasting styles. After graduating with a bachelor’s in Industrial Design, Rin discovered their true calling in illustration later in life, pursuing a Master’s degree in the UK. Their style is highly influenced by classic Western artists like Mary Blair and Hans Bacher, yet the subjects of their work are often drawn from Asian surroundings and everyday life, creating a powerful contrast between style and subject matter.

Their core concept is defined by “Whimsy and magic in everyday life.” They introduce fantasy elements into ordinary scenes—imagining elves in regular offices or mythical creatures delivering mail—all driven by a desire to inject excitement into the mundane. They strongly value diversity, striving to ensure their subjects reflect a wide range of body types, races, and genders. Rin loves making zines and interactive paper engineering, using the tactile nature of paper to tell complex stories.

Rin’s proudest achievement is creating the book cover illustration for ‘Hyakka No Maho’, a fantasy story perfectly suited to their style. This success was followed by international recognition, with their piece, ‘Lockdown in a Strange Room,’ being shortlisted for the World Illustration Awards 2022. Their work also includes creating unique visual narratives through interactive paper engineering, demonstrating their commitment to innovative storytelling.
